By now most people have heard of Twitter, this probably wasn’t the case a year ago but throughout 2008 Twitter really came into it’s own and left its main rivals behind.

I first started using Twitter back in April as I didn’t really understand what it could be used for… it seemed to be a site dedicated to peoples status updates and at first I didn’t like it, but I stayed with it posting updates now and then. It was only from around July time I took another proper look at Twitter and noticed just the many uses there was and from then I have loved it ever since.

These days Twitter is filled with updates with various stories behind them all, from posting a picture of the recent plane crash in the Hudson river in New York minutes after the plane came down to celebrities telling the world what they are up to.

Twitter has turned into such a useful tool that it can be used for almost everything and anyone. Businesses can use it to talk about products they have in development or offers they have on at the moment… bloggers and tell people about a recent post and respond to people who reply, it’s the easy communication that has helped drive Twitter forward and by only allowing 140 characters it allows people to get straight to the point (although I have noticed people use several updates to get there view across… that’s cheating people!)

So in this still very new year, I see many more businesses jumping on the Twitter bandwagon to try to get ahead of their competitors… who already will be there.
